WHAT I'M PLANNING TO BUY THIS YEAR

Friday, January 19, 2018

This might seem like a strange idea for a post, but I was thinking about what I'd like to read on blogs this year and the idea of long-term investment buys caught a spark somewhere in my brain.

Granted, this isn't a post about the 36 shades of pink lipstick I might potentially buy and every single purchase broken down as a big list - no, this is the realistic end-goal list of items I'd like to buy this year that will either make big changes to my work or lifestyle.

There are some things I've missed off this list as they're more 'making big savings to purchase something very adult' and am being very aware of my savings pot, but I have an idea of some solid purchases I'd like to make during the year to add to and improve what I currently own - let's call it sensible investment spending!

Wordpress

Technically I've already purchased this as I've got myself set-up and hosted on Wordpress (just need to officially move over) thanks to the fab pipdig - bit of a last minute decision to actually migrate across but something I'd been contemplating for a while, I will be sad to say goodbye to Blogger as this was my starting ground, but better layouts, SEO, and widgets galore are far more exciting - come at me customisation!

Editing tablet

I've been working on my retouching recently (hello smooth skin and colour correcting) and am absolutely loving it, but have been recommended to invest in a tablet and pen for more precision. It might be something a bit more down the line as work commands it, but would be hella useful.

Photography equipment

A bit of a general one because I am doing well with the lenses and kit I've got, but it's always exciting to invest in something new to up quality and try new imagery. There's some lenses I've been thinking about, and of course cameras, but we'll see how we go (aka let the bank decided oops)

Ethical underwear

Ever since getting Thought socks for Christmas, I've been obsessed with how top notch the quality is - honestly, softest yet thickest socks ever, my toes are so happy. I can clearly tell they'll last for years (no heels with holes) and they are ethical too, made from organic and well sourced materials that give back to causes and benefit the environment and workers too. I'd like to swap out some of my underwear for more breathable and ethical pieces, so I'm going to be scouring my usual ethical hit-ups for new releases over the months!

More sustainable clothing - mainly a summer coat/jacket and trousers!

I don't really need more clothing, but there are certainly some items that need swapping out or upgrading to better alternatives. After attending the People Tree SS18 press brunch, a few items aught my eye like a striped cotton suit (dream), a blue jumpsuit (yes), and definitely more floaty trousers and tops that I could get on board with. I like investing in quality and sustainability, so really it's just items that will add to what I already have and keep my wardrobe going - plus inspire another clear out, ooft one of my fave things to do ;)

What are you planning to buy or invest in this year? Let me know below!

THE VEGAN/CRUELTY-FREE SEPHORA HAUL - TESTING MILK MAKEUP, IGK HAIR, HERBIVORE BOTANICALS

Tuesday, January 16, 2018

I have been hyped to try some of our American pals' more advanced beauty products since taking cruelty-free/vegan makeup more seriously; they're definitely ahead in formulas and range of products across the board, and I've been itching for someone I know to visit the US so I could slyly get in a Sephora order.

After watching several US cruelty-free/vegan YouTubers (Tashina and Rhian are the best) and doing extensive research i.e. am I really going to need 3 shampoos and is this lipstick too pink?, I finally narrowed it down to specific OG products as you'd call them from 3 of the best brands Sephora has to offer.

We've got skincare, makeup, and haircare covered, so grab yourself a cuppa and enjoy the review (and also all the photos, because throwing glitter around was really fun).

MILK MAKEUP is probably one of the biggest vegan friendly makeup brands to hit Sephora in the last few years, with more people heading to their counter for fun and eye-catching products such as their glitter sticks and holographic highlighters, plus handy solid products such as solid cleansers and toners which are all airline approved (fab for that 100ml limit!) I've been following them for a while and taking notes of other products people I know have used, and because they sadly don't ship to the UK yet, it was with much restraint that I settled on three of their best-selling products (because all good things come in threes right?)

Firstly is the Blur Matte Foundation, which surprisingly isn't too matte but has nailed down the comfortable formula/natural skin-finish look. I did a first impressions of the products I bought on my Instagram Stories (which I've saved as a highlight so go watch that), and found my shade Golden Light a little warm toned, and when used with a damp beauty blender it wasn't as full coverage; but after a week or so of play I've made some decisions that are thankfully all positive - first off, Golden Light may not be my perfect hand-to-neck-to-face shade, but it does suit my summer skin-tone and gives me necessary warmth that a lighter shade would make me appear...let's say, washed out.

Aside from getting a lighter shade to mix in, I have found that in different lights the foundation balances and matches my face perfectly, and also it somehow mellows out over time rather than oxidizing orange, seemingly getting lighter and settling to match my true shade which is pretty cool.

In terms of formula, it's best applied with fingers or a silicone applicator for full coverage, and has a very lightweight powder finish which is amazing; it feels as though there is nothing on your skin and even after many hours it still feels comfortable.

I tested the foundation for 8 hours at a time in three scenarios - at home, going in and out of natural environments and central heating, and a whole day commuting around London. In all three, my makeup stayed and looked really fresh; granted after London there were marks from my glasses and some loss of product around the chin from my scarf, but the rest of my face looked covered and uncreased. Obviously the cooler the conditions the better it sticks to the skin, but even in humidity it passed the 'I want to scratch my face off' test.

You only need the teeniest amount for application as a little goes more than a long way, and for best results you should be exfoliating 2-3 times a week to keep skin smooth and prevent any cling. I would suggest more shades to make it easier to select, or minis so that if you are a UK buyer like me and can't pick a shade or want a small travel option, you can buy two and mix/test before getting a full size. Plus, who doesn't love minis?

Another rated product is the Flex Concealer, which I'd say is closest to Urban Decay's concealer in terms of formula, but with less coverage and slightly thicker. It is lightweight but again the colours are where it let me down - the shade Light which I assumed would be lighter than Golden Light was actually darker, and not great under the eyes unless mixed with another product. It does however balance out and I prefer it on my nose and forehead, and does give me a slight 'I caught the sun across my face' glow, but it's not doing the overall job I want.

I would 100% purchase again in a paler shade, and whilst the foundation does most of the concealing, Flex Concealer is a great refresher almost and subtly hydrates through the day. If you're having a good skin day, then this would be enough to conceal under-eyes and spots, so a nice summer option for no-makeup days.

Finally we have OG Red Lip Colour which I am absolutely in love with - a demi-matte crayon packed with butters and oils, and in a bold classic red which you can't go wrong with. When I first tried it I freaked out over much transferrable product there was after application, and even with a blot or 3 the product still looks really good albeit more drying, so I went sans-blot one day and found that it passed all eating/drinking/teeth staining tests. Truly a lipstick of the future.

I love the formula and pointed nib for precise application, and the shade range is fabulous too so definitely one to drop in your basket on your next Sephora shop.

Now something to get excited about - IGK is coming to the UK in a few weeks time and you better be ready for the hype! Their products have been recommended to me so often, and I'm glad I only picked up one product as they'll be within easy delivery access in no time!

So let's talk Jet Lag Dry Shampoo, a truly invisible product which finally answers every heavy-duty product loather/dark haired lady's prayers. I'm really not into feeling product in my hair, nor sleeping on a pillow with gunk smooshing into the fabric and onto my skin, so I tend to skip; but IGK has really nailed a rather weightless and hair-oomphing shampoo that I've quickly fallen in love with.

You get a very decent amount of product which is great, and the smell is very pleasant too, but the main pull is how well it works - for someone who has fine hair that gets greasy at the roots easily, this transforms an oil slick into a Hollywood slick, somehow absorbing oil and grease and making it look refreshed and textured. Whilst you can't feel product, you can see how it thickens the hair and it's easy to comb through too.

Overall, you cannot go wrong, it's worth every bit of hype and you'd be crazy not to pick up a can when it comes to Space NK in February - next on my list is the Beach Club Texture Spray, because we always need more texture!

Now for some Skincare and I tried not to go overboard as I really like my routine at the moment, and just wanted to try or repurchase brands I'd been researching for a long time.

Obviously I repurchased Sunday Riley Saturn which is a zinc and sulpher based mask that makes all your blackheads dry up and disappear; it's strong but works a treat, and I have mentioned it here before so won't go into too much detail, but using this twice a week has really helped calm breakouts, but also keep my pores clear and smooth which in turn stops me picking - result!

The brand I really wanted to try though was Herbivore, which I've been pining to try since 2015 and have watched it boom and grow since. I love brands that are natural and of course V/CF, so I've been keeping my hopes up on trying it and now I can safely say it is worth every penny (it's also coming to the UK later this year which is HUGE HOORAY!)

There were two products both from the same range I wanted most and opted to get the mini duo before splashing the cash so I could make sure I liked/didn't react to the products (spoiler I love them and all is great) - first the Blue Tansy Mask which is an AHA and BHA based exfoliating mask that resurfaces the skin and helps dry up and wave bye bye to blemishes, whilst calming redness and balancing oil with added willow bark.

I've been a huge fan of REN for years, but I think this mask may just overtake it thanks to the additional BHA acids too which work deeper under the surface to get rid of spots - from the quite fresh (almost dental) scent to the cool blue colour, it's an almost rubbery gloop that applies like a jelly and sets down to a very thin layer you could almost peel off, but is best removed in gentle circles and leaves skin so smooth, so fresh, and super clear too. it really does decongest and my skin hasn't looked so calm and fresh from a mask so quickly - add to the list immediately.

The Lapis Balancing Facial Oil also contains Blue Tansy, and I'd describe it as Sunday Riley Luna without the retinol - a very calming yet skin renewing (and plumping) oil that again smells fresh and also helps balance the skin without clogging pores. I prefer to use this in the morning as it is retinol free and lightweight, meaning makeup is less likely to slide, plus it calms redness during the day and allows my drier chin to get extra moisture whilst keeping my nose and cheeks oil free.

I do think it's one of the best oils I've tried, and I love the mini size of the bottle so I would absolutely repurchase a full size when they come to the UK, and it's fab to find an oil that is light yet isn't too dry nor overly oily - it's perfect!

And breathe! I think I typed so much and so fast at one point my fingers set ablaze, but I hope you found this review a helpful guide if buying from Sephora for the first time in the US, or if you're looking for more info on the products before their UK releases later this year - please MILK come to the UK or at least ship over via Sephora!

I absolutely love each product, even if some have some flaws because I know that it's small matters of colour and such so it's not enough to stop me using completely. Overall, best foundation ever tried, you can't beat a bold lip, and I might have fallen in love with a face mask and dry shampoo and need to elope quickly. Happy shopping!

5 SELF-HELP BOOKS TO KICK START 2018

Saturday, January 13, 2018

I love to start the new year with a self-help book or 3; it just helps me set myself up properly for the year to come and find a new confidence in myself when I can't quite yet find the push in myself to get ahead and grab the life I need by the lady-balls.

I'm a little slower on the reading than I would've like so far, but I've picked up 5 cracking reads that are a must if you want to either improve your skills or rediscover yourself in a new empowered form...

I really enjoyed 'The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**k' and was keen to get started on the sequel. As someone who felt pre-Christmas that my work and life was a bit all over the place, this really helped me get on track for 2018, and there were two things I mainly took away from the book - Must Lists and practising Strategise, Focus, Commit. I've already spoken about Must Lists in my last post, but if you need help focusing on a goal and actually achieving it then SFC is for you: think of it, as Sarah says, like remembering your key, phone, and wallet - keys unlock the next step, your phone is your ability to focus and make those things happen, and your wallet represents commitment to putting your money (ahem) where your mouth is. It's simple but so effective!

Can you believe there's a third book?! I've only just started reading it but rather than focusing on being a strong, organised, no sh*t kinda person, this one helps you build up confidence in yourself and stop listening to others tell you how they think you should be. From accepting your flaws to succeeding at success without traditional methods, it's definitely a mood booster and one for when you need some motivation to get what you want how you want.

Ikigai - The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life
I first researched Ikigai last year but then got swept up in many many other books and also life, so when I found a copy of 'The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life' I knew I had to get my head down and study the practise. Ikigai translates as 'a reason to jump out of bed each morning', to throw yourself into passions and find your purpose in life, and is described as a patient search for your own personal balance of passion, mission, vocation, and profession, which leads to you never retiring (because you're constantly fulfilled) and living longer - some villages in Japan house people who have lived past 100 years old after finding and living their ikigai, which is fantastic and I can't wait to learn more!

The Working Woman's Handbook
This, along with Little Black Book, has become one of the new 'must reads' for freelancers and business women everywhere. It features interviews with women in various careers to highlight important lessons and approaches to tasks, and also has quick exercises on things such as pitching an idea perfectly or proper social media practise - must put my phone down more often - but if you like questionnaires and identifying key areas to improve or emphasise, this is fab.

Little Black Book
Finally we have Little Black Book, which I was already planning on buying but when I picked up a copy and it opened on a page featuring advice on something I really needed, I was sold - fate in writing. From public speaking practise to building your brand, and negotiating that pay rise whilst also looking out for number one (that's you), it seems your life can be improved forever in just 115 pages - result!

Now, go get 2018 by the pages!

HOW I'M PLANNING MY WORK/BLOG BALANCE

Wednesday, January 10, 2018

I can be a bit of a procrastinator at times - I'm currently watching Brooklyn 99 whilst trying to get this typed out because Season 4 is out on Netflix and I'm hyped - and can get sidetracked from even making toast in the morning, but I've been trying to plan better and more importantly organise how I complete work and blog content and still have time to myself.

I got into a bad habit of writing posts the day before going live so that's the first thing I'm trying to fix, but other than that I've come up with 5 foolproof ways to plan a more effective work and blog routine that allows me to cook dinner and read a book in the evening, take photos on the weekends, and actual achieve what is actually possible in 24 hours.

To-Do Lists become Must Lists

I love a list, I could write lists all day every day and continually add tasks until I end up starting new lists, forget what I'm meant to be doing, and get a bit stressed up there. Writing everything down clears my head, but taking it one step further really makes lists manageable and easy to tick off.

It's all thanks to Sarah Knight's Must List which I read about in Get Your Sh*t Together, where she aims to mentally declutter and get your life sorted once and for all. Must Lists are for what you must get done asap, that day, in that urgent moment. If your list is 'buy groceries, write a blog post, book table for birthday, finish presentation, shave legs' well then you need to strategise what is actually urgent and needs completing immediately, and then share the other tasks over the next few days. Sure things crop up, but if your shopping is done and you've finished your presentation, you can finish your post in bed and skip the leg shave to compensate for a last-minute family gathering. With the main tasks covered and completed when they absolutely need to be, you don't feel bogged down with a long list and actually achieve that which is possible in the day and also urgent. Win-win!

My current Must List: finish blog post • finish tax return • reply emails • have a bath/read book

Monthly Blog Meetings

Basically I coerced my pal Jaye into a monthly Skype meeting where we talk content ideas, photo tips, how to get better opportunities, or even word emails and approach brands etc - basically anything to do with blogging and creative support. It's fab, because the outside input from someone who gets the industry is actually constructive, especially if they get what you do. Some of the questions we use to get each other thinking are simple, but they're effective and help us reignite the flame and keep ourselves on track analytics and content wise. Keep track of your traffic and engagement, and get conquering together!

Questions to ask: What am I enjoying right now? How can I spin an angle on what's already been done? Is what's seasonally appropriate relevant to my blog? What does this button on Analytics do?

Have set photo/work/writing days

My work days can vary from Tuesday to Friday which may seem a bit uncertain when planning but going off that actually makes setting tasks easy - if I can get photos taken on a Sunday (my usual day off) and work is Tuesday and Friday that week, I know I have Monday to edit my photos and write the outline to one post, Tuesday evening to start an edit, Wednesday to wrap up and finish one post, Thursday to do the rest, and then Friday at work with Saturday afternoon editing away, I can slot in tasks easily and plan accordingly, especially since I switched my schedule to posting every third day which means I have more room to breathe and get everything done on my Must List!

Going paper free where I can

Journals and planners are my shiz, I love a new diary at the start of a year but I never seemed to actually get full use from it / forgot to write things in, so I'm sticking to iCal for everything from shoot days, to Instagrams and spon work that needs to go live, and also my scheduled blog meetings. It keeps everything in one place work wise, and my messy lists on paper I already own (basically, not buying more stationery I don't need) It's clean, easy, and and allows the scribbles to stay off my nice Rifle Paper Co journal.

Finishing off by 6pm

It's currently 5:46pm as I write this so I'm cutting it fine (and might do some emails later I've been putting off which is a one time thing, promise) but switching your desktop off by a certain time each evening keeps structure and allows you not only to plan how you use your daylight hours, but also keeps evenings free for finishing that book, cooking a yummy dinner, having a bath, maybe even an early night (omg dream). It's good to keep balance, to not get stuck working past your mental capacity for the day - you know when you keep trying to force yourself to write or edit and it's just not coming? Just close the page and start again tomorrow. Go bake some cookies, you deserve it.

And if you don't do something on your Must List? It's not the end of the world, just get it finished first the next day and compensate on something else (you've got until March at least on the shaved legs front, it's still rather chill and it's an extra layer #sorrynotsorry #singlelife)
