THE VEGAN/CRUELTY-FREE SEPHORA HAUL - TESTING MILK MAKEUP, IGK HAIR, HERBIVORE BOTANICALS

Tuesday, January 16, 2018

I have been hyped to try some of our American pals' more advanced beauty products since taking cruelty-free/vegan makeup more seriously; they're definitely ahead in formulas and range of products across the board, and I've been itching for someone I know to visit the US so I could slyly get in a Sephora order.

After watching several US cruelty-free/vegan YouTubers (Tashina and Rhian are the best) and doing extensive research i.e. am I really going to need 3 shampoos and is this lipstick too pink?, I finally narrowed it down to specific OG products as you'd call them from 3 of the best brands Sephora has to offer.

We've got skincare, makeup, and haircare covered, so grab yourself a cuppa and enjoy the review (and also all the photos, because throwing glitter around was really fun).

MILK MAKEUP is probably one of the biggest vegan friendly makeup brands to hit Sephora in the last few years, with more people heading to their counter for fun and eye-catching products such as their glitter sticks and holographic highlighters, plus handy solid products such as solid cleansers and toners which are all airline approved (fab for that 100ml limit!) I've been following them for a while and taking notes of other products people I know have used, and because they sadly don't ship to the UK yet, it was with much restraint that I settled on three of their best-selling products (because all good things come in threes right?)

Firstly is the Blur Matte Foundation, which surprisingly isn't too matte but has nailed down the comfortable formula/natural skin-finish look. I did a first impressions of the products I bought on my Instagram Stories (which I've saved as a highlight so go watch that), and found my shade Golden Light a little warm toned, and when used with a damp beauty blender it wasn't as full coverage; but after a week or so of play I've made some decisions that are thankfully all positive - first off, Golden Light may not be my perfect hand-to-neck-to-face shade, but it does suit my summer skin-tone and gives me necessary warmth that a lighter shade would make me appear...let's say, washed out.

Aside from getting a lighter shade to mix in, I have found that in different lights the foundation balances and matches my face perfectly, and also it somehow mellows out over time rather than oxidizing orange, seemingly getting lighter and settling to match my true shade which is pretty cool.

In terms of formula, it's best applied with fingers or a silicone applicator for full coverage, and has a very lightweight powder finish which is amazing; it feels as though there is nothing on your skin and even after many hours it still feels comfortable.

I tested the foundation for 8 hours at a time in three scenarios - at home, going in and out of natural environments and central heating, and a whole day commuting around London. In all three, my makeup stayed and looked really fresh; granted after London there were marks from my glasses and some loss of product around the chin from my scarf, but the rest of my face looked covered and uncreased. Obviously the cooler the conditions the better it sticks to the skin, but even in humidity it passed the 'I want to scratch my face off' test.

You only need the teeniest amount for application as a little goes more than a long way, and for best results you should be exfoliating 2-3 times a week to keep skin smooth and prevent any cling. I would suggest more shades to make it easier to select, or minis so that if you are a UK buyer like me and can't pick a shade or want a small travel option, you can buy two and mix/test before getting a full size. Plus, who doesn't love minis?

Another rated product is the Flex Concealer, which I'd say is closest to Urban Decay's concealer in terms of formula, but with less coverage and slightly thicker. It is lightweight but again the colours are where it let me down - the shade Light which I assumed would be lighter than Golden Light was actually darker, and not great under the eyes unless mixed with another product. It does however balance out and I prefer it on my nose and forehead, and does give me a slight 'I caught the sun across my face' glow, but it's not doing the overall job I want.

I would 100% purchase again in a paler shade, and whilst the foundation does most of the concealing, Flex Concealer is a great refresher almost and subtly hydrates through the day. If you're having a good skin day, then this would be enough to conceal under-eyes and spots, so a nice summer option for no-makeup days.

Finally we have OG Red Lip Colour which I am absolutely in love with - a demi-matte crayon packed with butters and oils, and in a bold classic red which you can't go wrong with. When I first tried it I freaked out over much transferrable product there was after application, and even with a blot or 3 the product still looks really good albeit more drying, so I went sans-blot one day and found that it passed all eating/drinking/teeth staining tests. Truly a lipstick of the future.

I love the formula and pointed nib for precise application, and the shade range is fabulous too so definitely one to drop in your basket on your next Sephora shop.

Now something to get excited about - IGK is coming to the UK in a few weeks time and you better be ready for the hype! Their products have been recommended to me so often, and I'm glad I only picked up one product as they'll be within easy delivery access in no time!

So let's talk Jet Lag Dry Shampoo, a truly invisible product which finally answers every heavy-duty product loather/dark haired lady's prayers. I'm really not into feeling product in my hair, nor sleeping on a pillow with gunk smooshing into the fabric and onto my skin, so I tend to skip; but IGK has really nailed a rather weightless and hair-oomphing shampoo that I've quickly fallen in love with.

You get a very decent amount of product which is great, and the smell is very pleasant too, but the main pull is how well it works - for someone who has fine hair that gets greasy at the roots easily, this transforms an oil slick into a Hollywood slick, somehow absorbing oil and grease and making it look refreshed and textured. Whilst you can't feel product, you can see how it thickens the hair and it's easy to comb through too.

Overall, you cannot go wrong, it's worth every bit of hype and you'd be crazy not to pick up a can when it comes to Space NK in February - next on my list is the Beach Club Texture Spray, because we always need more texture!

Now for some Skincare and I tried not to go overboard as I really like my routine at the moment, and just wanted to try or repurchase brands I'd been researching for a long time.

Obviously I repurchased Sunday Riley Saturn which is a zinc and sulpher based mask that makes all your blackheads dry up and disappear; it's strong but works a treat, and I have mentioned it here before so won't go into too much detail, but using this twice a week has really helped calm breakouts, but also keep my pores clear and smooth which in turn stops me picking - result!

The brand I really wanted to try though was Herbivore, which I've been pining to try since 2015 and have watched it boom and grow since. I love brands that are natural and of course V/CF, so I've been keeping my hopes up on trying it and now I can safely say it is worth every penny (it's also coming to the UK later this year which is HUGE HOORAY!)

There were two products both from the same range I wanted most and opted to get the mini duo before splashing the cash so I could make sure I liked/didn't react to the products (spoiler I love them and all is great) - first the Blue Tansy Mask which is an AHA and BHA based exfoliating mask that resurfaces the skin and helps dry up and wave bye bye to blemishes, whilst calming redness and balancing oil with added willow bark.

I've been a huge fan of REN for years, but I think this mask may just overtake it thanks to the additional BHA acids too which work deeper under the surface to get rid of spots - from the quite fresh (almost dental) scent to the cool blue colour, it's an almost rubbery gloop that applies like a jelly and sets down to a very thin layer you could almost peel off, but is best removed in gentle circles and leaves skin so smooth, so fresh, and super clear too. it really does decongest and my skin hasn't looked so calm and fresh from a mask so quickly - add to the list immediately.

The Lapis Balancing Facial Oil also contains Blue Tansy, and I'd describe it as Sunday Riley Luna without the retinol - a very calming yet skin renewing (and plumping) oil that again smells fresh and also helps balance the skin without clogging pores. I prefer to use this in the morning as it is retinol free and lightweight, meaning makeup is less likely to slide, plus it calms redness during the day and allows my drier chin to get extra moisture whilst keeping my nose and cheeks oil free.

I do think it's one of the best oils I've tried, and I love the mini size of the bottle so I would absolutely repurchase a full size when they come to the UK, and it's fab to find an oil that is light yet isn't too dry nor overly oily - it's perfect!

And breathe! I think I typed so much and so fast at one point my fingers set ablaze, but I hope you found this review a helpful guide if buying from Sephora for the first time in the US, or if you're looking for more info on the products before their UK releases later this year - please MILK come to the UK or at least ship over via Sephora!

I absolutely love each product, even if some have some flaws because I know that it's small matters of colour and such so it's not enough to stop me using completely. Overall, best foundation ever tried, you can't beat a bold lip, and I might have fallen in love with a face mask and dry shampoo and need to elope quickly. Happy shopping!

NEW VEGAN FRIENDLY BEAUTY PRODUCTS I'VE BEEN TESTING

Thursday, January 04, 2018

It's been a while since I shared some new beauty faves, and with it being Veganaury and all, I thought I'd inspire you with some vegan friendly beauty buys I've been loving the past few months to inject something new (and cruelty-free) into your routine. Whether you're looking for haircare, luxury bath products, or an intergalactic mask that will clear out your pores, there's a lil'something something for every beauty need...

In the skincare department, there's been a few new additions - I've added the BYBI Supercharge Serum* to my morning routine as a source of hydration, and it's a rather unique texture as it feels like a dry oil when applied, but does glide evenly across the skin like a hydrating serum should. I find it very brightening, glow-inducing, and gives skin a nice dewy finish; I do think it could have a less earthy scent, but this is easily overlooked with the results it's given over a few weeks.

Two products I got during Black Friday and have slotted happily into my routine are Pai's Echium and Argan Gentle Eye Cream and Age Confidence Cream - the eye cream is gloriously thick and hydrating on the under-eyes (maybe too hydrating yet I'd rather have slippy concealer than dry eyes) and I love how brightening it is also, a decent investment for delicate skin! And the Age Cream might seem a bit premature however I've been looking for a decent vegan night cream for ages and this fit the bill perfectly - it protects against irritation, locks in moisture, smooths out skin, and has a pretty swish pump which I love. Again, I think it could use a few drops of lavender just to lift the quite earthy scent, but the moisture it brings is exactly what I need in the winter.

That intergalactic mask I mentioned? Well it's an Oskia beauty in the form of their CityLife Detox Mask* which mixes a very holographic liquid with space dust (kinda) to create the ultimate anti-pollution busting mask you've ever tried. The sachets are big, designed to cover you face, neck, chest, and back, but I like to decant half the packet into a plastic bowl, mix, and apply with a spoon, and just go to town on the layering. What you get is a rubbery texture which when applied thickly, makes a really satisfying layer that not only pulls out the gunk, but peels off in one fell swoop (it's important you get a good layer of this across the face, otherwise it's a real skin tugger - ouch!) Honestly, my skin hasn't looked so degunked other than when I've been to a dermatologist, so buy it, invest in it, get it on your face asap.

I'm always trying to find hair products that will keep my scalp clean for 5 days (please) and also my ends smooth yet textured (not asking much), and so far the Løre Originals Cleanse and Purify shampoo* has given my scalp in good scrub - packed with sea salt and cactus, it definitely gives you a squeaky clean feel without stripping, and bonus, if you sleep on it damp, you get a lot of poofy volume - need I say more?

If you do need to tame the poof though, let me suggest Noughty's new serums - one for frizz and another for shine. Because my hair is fine and dislikes too much product, I take half a pea size and disperse through damp hair (too wet seems to make it clump whilst dry hair makes it look too slick), brushing it evenly through and sticking it to the lower ends of the hair so not too much ends up near the roots. They both smell lush and do keep hair smooth, and also protect against heat up to 220 degrees!

I'm going to cheat here and mix a bath oil into bodycare because technically it keeps your skin moisturised whilst bathing, but the new Oskia Vitamin E Bath Oil* is glorious - it smells like mint chocolate mixed with lavender and relaxation but it works so well together, and when you add a few caps in the bath it creates an almost milky texture that keeps your skin smooth and soft for the length of your soak and beyond.

Once you get to the 'beyond', I recommend Pai Comfrey and Calendula Body Cream; I get a lot of dry irritated patches under my boobs, and just lack moisture all over in general, but this has soothed and hydrated all over very quickly - it's not too slippy like a lotion, nor too greasy or overly thick like a butter, it just slots perfectly in the middle and allows the moisturiser to heal sensitive areas whilst working its way down the epidermis to keep skin hydrated in the long-term. It's a lovely subtle herbal smell, works into the skin easily, and is super kind to all skin conditions - let's get slathering!

THE HOMEBODY'S GUIDE TO SURVIVING A BUSY WEEK

Monday, November 27, 2017

Although I am out and about a lot shooting and working with clients (and also in Waitrose or TK Maxx buying props *cough*) I am very much a homebody - I like my cosy office in the snug, sitting between a radiator and the fire; my double bed with orthopaedic mattress (so comfy); wearing bedsocks and loungewear when editing, and also just editing away at work.

I like doing it all from home.

This week however, I've gone and done a mad one. I'm currently on a flight to Edinburgh for two days, coming home bedtime Tuesday before heading off to work first thing Wednesday, with one day at home (hopefully to decorate the tree) and then packing up again for 4 days in the country.

It's either all or bloomin' nothing with me, and this really is all!

I'm excited though, as I've been wanting to go to Edinburgh for ages and booked the trip specifically to visit the Christmas markets, and other than 4 hour round trips to visit family every few months I've not actually been back into the depths of the country for yeeears, and I know it's going to look cute and festive which is enough to make this busy week acceptable.

With all that in mind, I thought I do some sort of compilation post - not quite packing tips, not quite a what's in my bag, nor a how to survive 5 hours away from your bed post either but that would be great - something hopefully people can relate to if they're either off on an overnight city trip, working remotely, or just generally having a week where your usual routine and habits are out the window and you need to adapt asap!

Obviously you need to get your beauty essentials sorted - having had v hormonal skin I try not to change my skincare too much when travelling so it stays happy/doesn't freak out at the worst moment, and if you can get your faves in miniature or decant them easily then that makes life much easier.

I really like having my full routine available, but flying especially means I've had to leave some products out or try to decant into bottles that are still a bit large for overnight - I've pulled out my favourite Pai minis and travel Oskia cleanser to keep me clean all week long, whilst selecting key extras such as Oskia CityLife Booster and Glossier Super Pure Serum on their size and job (one to protect from the elements, the other to keep blemishes at bay) so I can save some space in my carry-on...

Speaking of essentials, space and time-saving makes travel a lot easier, plus you don't have the luxury of your usual set up or space so I've cut down my makeup to what I really need - no fancy smokey eyes or palettes, just bits to swish and go! I popped two of my fave eyeshadows in a mini palette to keep them safe, a multi-functional bronzer for contour and colour, and pre-mixed my foundation in a small pot so I can apply without having to dip or carry loads of bottles; it's all there, packed and ready to go, so it's as close to home as you can get!

Along the lines of careful packing, I'm making sure I've packed enough clothes to keep me my usual warm snuggly temperature but are also light and taking up minimal space in my suitcase - I like having options, hence why being at home is a luxury as you've got a whole wardrobe to choose from, so I'm really trying to be practical and get over the fact I *think* I need loads of clothes.

In regards to an overnight trip, I'm wearing the same outfit both days (a nice bulky jumper, which is v warm but also saves a tonne of space in my bag) and packing a spare thermal alongside the necessary 20 panic pants and socks, so I've already filled the corners well enough ;) Then my fave pair of pjs which makes me feel cosy and safe in a way because they remind me of my cosy bed, and some bed-socks because you can never take a girl from her fluffy socks, no matter the location.

Also, I think it's nice to pack a few things that make wherever you are feel like home - I take a relaxing pillow spray with me so it helps me settle into sleep better, plus it makes my brain think it's my own pillow (the new REN sleep spray has a more herbal grounding scent which really helps you drop off into sleep and keep any anxiety far from your mind).

And as I'm driving to the countryside, I have the luxury of packing things I couldn't usually fly with - a few of my favourite candles to make places smell like home, a cosy blanket to make nights on the sofa feel as comfy as my own, and maybe if you're really extra, your fave mug (because a morning tea routine is v serious and I love my reindeer mug).

Here's where it gets a bit more practical and really making a homebody life an easier one when busy - food is one of the most important things I have to think about day-to-day, so planning where and what you're eating can save a lot of stress and important brain space. I've booked brunch and dinner for when we land as I'll be hangry AF, and got meals frozen for when I get home so it makes life easier between editing and packing. Also researching places to eat before you get there and pinning them on maps, huge saviour when on the hunt for hot chocolate!

Despite being away, it's also not really a holiday, so trying to be 'on' work-wise is a balance - as I'm going sans laptop, a polite OOO lets people know I'm keeping tabs but not able to reply straight away until on wifi, also making sure to send important emails the night before keeps you covered until you're at your desk again.

Finally, being based at home a lot means chargers and power are everywhere (no 1% here) so you really gotta get your bum in gear and make sure you have portable chargers and backups ready - before you go anywhere, make sure your phone, backup charger, battery and spares are 100% and to keep everything on low power or switched off when they're not needed - all good until you're back in your room!

Now there's a vegan brunch booking calling my name, and 24 hours of Edinburgh to enjoy before climbing back into my squishy orthopaedic heaven...

BLACK FRIDAY SKINCARE DEALS YOU CAN'T MISS OUT ON - PAI SKINCARE + OSKIA SKINCARE

Friday, November 24, 2017

Get your laptops and bank details ready ladies and gents, it's finally Black Friday and if you're like me and hoping to get some discounts to spare your account any further Christmas splurging, then I have two offerings really worth a purchase or two...

Skincare is my main bag and I am all for a great deal on things I love (especially if it's near December) plus I'm also for brands who are doing a little bit more to be charitable and give back even when discounting, so it's pretty awesome that today both Pai and Oskia (my two favourite and only skincare brands I use these days) are offering not only great discounts but are also partnering up with some great charities to give something back with every purchase.

Firstly Pai are not only offering 25% off their entire online range* but are also collaborating with Lauren from GIRLvsCANCER to donate £1 from every product sold to her four chosen cancer charities that she works with and raises money for - all you need to do is enter BLACKPAIDAY at checkout and you're good to go.

Lauren has done so much work to raise awareness and funds for charities to keep supporting those diagnosed and provide care, information, and prevent further cases with better detection and treatment; her tit-tees have been a huge success and now by partnering with Pai, both Lauren and the fab skincare team are hoping to raise even more awareness and cash for an important cause - and I'm here to enable you with some of my fave products!

Camellia and Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser
I bang on about this cleanser all the time, but the Camellia and Rose Cleanser is one of the best hydrating and creamy products I've tried, plus it really does get rid of every scrap of makeup when it comes to that delightful evening cleanse.

Rose makes the cream super gentle which is great if you have skin prone to redness, irritation, or sensitivity, and the oils incorporated allow makeup and grime to get broken down effectively without stripping the skin.

I use a good 50p size amount to work into the skin and either remove makeup or leave on clean skin for a few minutes to give myself extra hydration before removing with one of their soft cloths (these too are my fave, so fluffy yet effective!!)

Zinc and Copaiba Blemish Serum
Getting fast and noticeable results from skincare is as rare as snow on Christmas, but this serum can do just that; I recently lapsed on my last bottle of Blemish Serum and could tell my skin was a little more blah and clogged than usual, and after picking up a new one I noticed the next morning my skin was looking clearer and blemishes reduced, clearing up faster than before.

It's a true miracle worker that you can feel working on those problem areas without stripping or drying them out, just good ol'nature's magic bottled - one I'd recommend for all with acne/regular hormonal breakouts!

Geranium and Thistle Rebalancing Moisturiser
I never really understood moisturiser until a few years ago, I simply thought it was extra hydration and that the more slip, the better the grip - I was very wrong.

Moisturisers not only, well, moisturise, but there also levels of moisture and ingredients that affect each skin type, and after a while of having too much and then not enough (and not good enough ingredients) I was recommended Pai's Rebalancing Moisturiser and it's been fabulous for me - I have combination skin and basically don't want to upset it with too much cream to clog the pores but not get enough that my drier areas are like 'FEED ME'.

It's very light but you can feel it getting to work, sealing in your previous skincare and balancing out the levels of moisture in the epidermis, which is great on days I wear makeup as it conserves the surface moisture without allowing the elements and products strip it out and dry me out as the day goes on - a great pick is

Copaiba Deep Cleanse AHA Mask
If you like exfoliating your skin and unclogging all the gunk from your pores, then this mask will truly work a treat! Whack this on once a week (I'm currently wearing it now whilst typing) and the fruit AHAs will gently break down the top layers of skin to rid and renew dead skin cells whilst Copaiba treats and improves acne-prone skin health.

Within 10 minutes you'll see a brighter and smoother difference in your skin, so if you're either in a pampering rush or just want that one hero product that can do 2 jobs at once effectively, this is a mask must for your collection!

Gentle Genius Camellia and Bergamot Body Wash
Since moving further south my skin has been a lot drier (great for spotty areas, not so much elsewhere) and washing in harder water has made my skin a lot more itchy, blotchy, and generally unhappy. I never really thought a body wash could make a difference, but after one too many flare ups I decided to stick with something natural all round to keep my skin happy.

Since switching to Gentle Genius, my body gets more hydration, the ingredients (including vitamin E and omegas) soothe any irritation and lather naturally, plus the wash is made without sulphates so you know only what is there and present naturally is getting put back into your skin - if you're a dry skin gal, this is right up your street.

Echium and Argan Gentle Eye Cream
One of my recent additions is this deliciously nourishing eye cream - in the past I've had red flaking and very itchy gross eyes, and more recently very dehydrated under-eyes, so when I tested it out first time round I knew it would give that delicate area a much needed boost.

Rich in omegas 3 and 6, it helps smooth out wrinkles and hydrate the skin which is definitely needed this time of year, and it's never too early IMO to start protecting and regenerating the eye areas, so even this ends up being a luxurious drink for your eyes, it's one worth having ;)

Now Oskia are also stepping up and offering 20% off their products today with the code BRIGHT17, but are also donating all profits from sales today to Coppafeel, which is pretty darn incredible! Now if you've been holding out on trying their hero cleanser or maybe want to dabble in the other products, here's 6 I've been loving all year long...

Renaissance Cleansing Gel
Again, another product I always always go on about - if you don't know much about this cleanser you've been missing out, because it's seriously great.

What starts as a gel melts into a more balmy texture, melting into the skin and helping to revive and brighten skin thanks to the pumpkin enzymes (it's also great at getting rid of acne scarring and inflammation), stimulates cell regeneration, purifies, and is one of the many Oskia products to contain MSM which is great at unclogging pores!

Bare skin, full face, or as a nourishing mask, it's an absolutely skin-changing cleanser and just go get it - you won't regret it.

CityLife Facial Mist
CityLife is Oskia's new launch and it's really worth checking out; pollution is rife in our daily lives (from getting the tube to staring at your screen all day) and really affects the skin.

I didn't realise how much pollution was affecting me and thought by being in the countryside I was a-okay - turns out even I was getting my fair share of pollutants in my pores, and since adding in the range I've seen a huge improvement in my skin.

The spray is the easiest option to add into your routine, and is a lovely yet effective option for toner as it creates a barrier against pollution and free-radicals all day long, has a very refreshing scent, and just gives you a nice refresh post cleanse. Give your skin a few spritz day and night and see how much calmer your complexion is.

CityLife Cleansing Concentrate
I always worry about how much of my makeup seeps into my pores, let alone pollution, so I always second cleanse with this to make sure my pores are squeaky clean (in a good way).

Foaming cleansers haven't been great on my skin in the past, but this has a more velvety and hydrating texture that makes sure your skin doesn't suffer whilst you cleanse, and really does make the difference after a grimy day - it detoxifies, balances and eliminates sebum, and restores the skin against damage caused in the skin during the day, so is definitely worth a try if you're commuting daily!

CityLife Booster
The true hero and staple to this range is the booster, and although the most expensive option it really makes every penny work; the booster has been years in the making and targets specific pollutants and radicals that can affect both our health and skin the most, and is really concentrated miracle in a dropper.

Even though I recommend this more for people who travel and live in cities, it really has done something special to my skin - aside from a few blemishes, my overall complexion is much more toned, clear, smoother, and a lot less irritated.

It's insane how much it pulls out smog and protects the skin all day long, and after a few days you will see a truly significant improvement in your face - just use 1-3 drops daily in serum (1 if around the house, 2-3 if going into polluted climates) and let it do it's thing!

Restoration Oil
I love using oils, and whilst retinol is a must for me in the evenings, during the day I find it a bit much to be laying into my skin and have come to love the Restoration Oil as not only an extra boost of moisture but also a plumping and smoothing treat.

It smells like chocolate orange, improves radiance, and is great under makeup as a primer, plus it's non-comedogenic which means your pores won't get clogged nor will it irritate any other blemishes!

Micro Exfoliating Balm
Finally, something we all need this time of year - a true skin buffer to get rid of those dry lips during matte lip season! Perfect for sensitive skin, this balm goes a little further by working both on the surface and below by activating upon contact with water to really work away the dead skin cells - also, if a physical exfoliant isn't your bag, mix it into the cleanser for a more gentle scrub and let it work it's magic slowly and luxuriously.

I love that this comes with a little spatula so you can use only the amount you need (plus v. hygienic) and the scrub is made up of pure MSM granules which help unclogg pores, and also a scrub that helps reduce redness after buffing? Genius!

Now if you're feeling in the skincare mood, get adding to that basket to make some serious savings and help some fab charities!

6 BEAUTY PRODUCTS GETTING ME THROUGH AUTUMN/WINTER

Monday, November 13, 2017

Tis the season of dry elbows and extra exfoliation, as well as baths and hot chocolates, but also those dry elbows.

I'm a bit terrible at keeping moisture in my skin at the best of times, but come the colder seasons I can see those dry irritated areas flaring up and feel more like old parchment than I do human, and if you get the same feeling then I've got some products that'll sort those winter scales right out...

I've never really landed on a body moisturiser, which is probably why I don't enjoy moisturising; after many dips and slathers, I've rediscovered Palmer's Cocoa Butter and not only is smelling like chocolate great, but it's quickly soothed and softened a lot of of my dry and cracked areas, especially those angry red and itchy patches. It's a classic you can't go wrong with and now I'm rubbing my weenus like no tomorrow (because your weenus is your elbow guys...)

Despite my strong love of Lush's festive body wash, I needed something gentle on my eczema prone areas, something to nourish and moisturise without too many harsh chemicals, and Pai's Gentle Genius Wash* has been a true hero - it has a very subtle herby smell which I love, and the lather is really moisturising so is great at rehydrating those irritated areas. Being sulphate-free, it's a truly fab option for sensitive skin, plus it doubles up as shaving foam which is a win-win for lazy girls!

If you like soft hands, then let me point you in the direction of The Body Shop Hemp Hand Cream which is hands down (pun intended) the thickest and most deliciously moisturising cream ever. It's a nice neutral smell, non-irritant, seriously rich, and always keeps my hands happy through winter - what more could you want?

Softness and hydration I always overlooked was pre-makeup, and since adding two pumps of Too Faced Hangover Primer* into my routine, my skin and makeup has been feeling more hydrated than ever; foundation lasts longer and wears better, plus the added coconut water gives that extra boost we could all use this time of year - who says matte is best when you can have a dewy glow all year?

Of course with lots of dry skin comes exfoliation, and whilst I'm not a big fan of physical exfoliants I do love Oskia Micro Exfoliating Balm* which seems to work as both physical and chemical - once wet, the balm starts to tingle and helps buff off all the dead skin, perfect if like me you have a reoccurring dry patch on your lips, plus if you need a real scrub-a-dub after a long day out, this will really freshen up you skin to rival a soft squishy baba.

And speaking of those baby soft lips, just as nourishing as Palmer's is on my skin, the Cocoa Butter Lip Balm really keeps those chapped lips at bay through the winter - just slather on a few layers morning and night and you'll have no problem wearing dry matte lipsticks all season long, especially when drinking a hot chocolate or two ;)

5 SKINCARE PRODUCTS FOR BLEMISHED SKIN - CRUELTY-FREE/VEGAN

Friday, November 03, 2017

Skincare is my main love, and after sharing 5 essential products for all skin types, I wanted to shout out to my fellow blemished/acne-prone skin types with 5 (okay maybe 6) products you need in your arsenal to soothe and heal any breakouts you've got past, present, and future.

They're all cruelty-free and vegan, some more suitable for sensitive skins and others a bit more active for those who can take it, but I can guarantee there's a way to make each one work for you, and to see a huge difference too...

Pai Geranium and Thistle Rebalancing Day Cream* is a very gentle option for skin that hydrates enough to feel comfortable all day long without clogging the pores or sinking in too quick. It's very light, sealing in all the products I've used in the morning, and the formula helps balance oil production so you don't gave to worry about an overly greasy t-zone 6 hours later!

The key to keeping spots at bay is always exfoliation, and the Pai Copaiba Deep Cleanse AHA Mask* does just that and more - the light fruit extracts help to delicately exfoliate the skin whilst the clay also draws out and cleanses the pores of sebum and gunk, it's a true double threat for spots.

A new addition I've been trying and had heard good things about is Glossier Pure Serum, one of the few Glossier products that is vegan and aims to get you that dream Glossier girl skin. It's an extremely watery and light serum that's best applied directly to the skin (I use 4 drops, one on each cheek, the forehead, and chin) and contains zinc which is a well-known spot killer. I've been using a few weeks now and I like it....but I don't love it. I'd say it's definitely good at calming redness, and I haven't had any proper spots come up, it's just not cleared up those under-skin ones that linger around for months. If you get more 'poppable' spots, this may work a trick, but I'd also highly suggest Pai Copaiba and Zinc Serum* which has more natural ingredients and really does add clarity and clears up skin!

Speaking of redness, Sunday Riley Luna is a godsend at calming skin and clearing up spots and scarring pronto. I've raved about this loads, and although pricey it seriously works miracles. The added retinol helps clear up scarring and take down redness, protects form pollutants that clog pores, plus it helps skin renew faster which is always a plus when you need a spot to disappear pronto ;)

If pronto is your thing, then Sunday Riley Saturn* is one to try - a high sulphur based mask that shrinks spots, reduces sebum, and prevents further breakouts. My pores always feel cleared out after using this, and those big under-skin nasties I was talking about? Shrunk and calm again! Definitely a quick long-lasting fix for breakouts.

Okay, so I'm cheating on the 5 products here, but I had to give a little nod to Indie Lee Blemish Mask. Indie Lee is a fab natural brand and their clay mask is a great topical treatment that works at calming breakouts and clearing out the pores whilst also mildly exfoliating. It's not as active as Saturn, but it's a lot better than whacking on Sudocreme and hoping a spot will vanish. Expect your blackheads to be tiny by morning!
